Wakefield Bobtails has had the privilege of being one of very few catteries in Canada to work with Kurilians. We raised 10 amazing litters including nearly 50 cats, and have made many human friends along the way. While we will continue to do therapy work with our cats, they are retired from breeding. We look forward to working with existing and new Canadian catteries working with our lines, showing our cats at upcoming TICA shows, and continuing to do therapy work on the homestead and off. If you are interested in Kurilian Bobtail therapy, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or reach out through Instagram @wakefieldbobs
Smart, playful, and sporting an exquisitely soft awn coat, these wild cats are social, gentle giants. Known and loved by farmers and fishing folks in the Kuril Islands for hundreds of years, Kurilian Bobtails have only recently been recognized by feline associations. The Kuril Islands are a volcanic archipelago between Russia and Japan where these cats sustain themselves by hunting, fishing and adopting local humans. The Kurilian’s closest relatives are the Siberian Forest Cat and the Japanese Bobtails, both known for being playful and socially outgoing. Though a popular pet in the UK, the Kurilian is lesser know in Canada and the US but beginning to gain popularity.
As a natural breed Kurilians are very healthy cats. There are no known health issues that significantly affect them, unlike several breeds that were created by humans. Kurilian Bobtails often live to be 20 years old and older.
We selected a mix of older lines and newer ones (with more recent ancestry from the islands) to carry on the good work of these catteries and add diversity to the gene pool.
